My images are created when I am lost in a sea of elaborate swirls and whimsical fancies; a dreamy yet conscious state of mind. This collection invites the viewer to discard reality for a spell and become submerged in the delicate detail of the art. Playful aspects frolic while darker elements hide amongst the innocent, and gentle wisps of folk art caress the paper.

Joanna uses oil paints, varnish and resin lacquer on aluminium sheet, to build up layers of abstract space and floating organic forms. She evokes a sense of familiarity and at the same time otherworldliness. This exhibition explores the confusion of scale, taking inspiration from embryonic images and human anatomy.

This will be the third solo exhibition for Jenny Phillips at Ripley Arts Centre. The oil paintings represent her personal travels to Europe and Egypt. Each canvas depicts a moment captured on camera, and stored in her memory for translation with paint. This year the subject matter is about having the freedom to choose how and what to paint, without restrictions. The size of the paintings is much smaller than usual, depicting the intimacy of the thought behind the work.
