The garden at the turn of the year is brightened by camellias and hellebores, but also offers the botanical painter more subtle subjects, often overlooked. The delicate structure of a skeleton leaf or the nuances of colour in a faded petal are as challenging and exciting to paint on a grey winter’s day as the vivid blooms of a conventional summer garden.

Julie Woolnough: ‘Seascapes – towards abstraction’
28th March to 5th May 2017
Open evening 4th April 7-9pm

‘Seascapes – towards abstraction’ is a collection of original acrylic paintings. It reflects my love of being by the coast and of trying to capture the energy and mood of ‘being in the moment’. The paintings are becoming less representational as time goes on.

I have always loved art since doing Art ‘A’ level at school, but like many people, I never thought I was good enough to make it a career, so my path went in a different direction. Despite that, I have always expressed myself creatively, with interior design projects, attending various crafts courses such as glass blowing and stone carving, and have always had a love for the countryside and coast.

After 35 years of doing something completely different, I took time out from my role as a PA in an Investment Bank and reconnected with painting. I was encouraged by the What If… Gallery in Dartford to share exhibition space with three other artists and from that little acorn some painting branches grew! They reached out to selling work in a Pop up shop in the Bluewater shopping mall, and from then on I was hooked.

Over the past few years I have been on several painting trips to Pembrokeshire and Cornwall and am inspired by their rugged coastlines and how it makes me feel. I like to paint outdoors and be in the moment. This exhibition of seascapes veers towards abstraction and of capturing the mood or experience of the sea, rather than the representational form. Whatever I paint lately tends to look like a seascape with headland jutting in from the left or right. I guess it is telling me something about where I want to be, and that probably isn’t in North Kent!

My work focuses on the impact of urbanisation on the natural environment. My predominant medium is photography and illustration, some of my work places plants and wildlife into locations in an illustrative way through editing and at times using self-adhesive prints to create semi-permanent compositions. The exhibition also includes a number of photographs and mixed media pieces of different locations that I have visited.
