Dora Tuttiett26th July-16th August 2002
In the 1950's Dora's two scholarships enabled her to begin studying art at Bromley College and then move on to specialise in oil painting at the Royal Academy in London. Her interest in colour and Abstraction led Dora away from working in the Classical Academic tradition towards what she today describes as 'Conceptual Abstraction'. Her paintings often emerge from life's experiences and real life situations. In some of her works she deviates further from 'true' Abstraction by incorporating the figurative form: this action, pioneered by the American artist Willem De Kooning in the late 50's, seems to provide an intermediary plane for any viewer wishing to seek a realist connection. The skilful quality of Dora's work has been formerly recognised and accolades include: The David Murray Award for Landscape painting, First prize from Unilever for her drawings and Second prize for a painting submitted at the British Standards Institute.
Dora has held many shows around the country and venues include: The Royal Academy, The Mall Gallery, and galleries in the West End of London. She has also held ten one woman shows and has received commissions from Scotland, Los Angeles, USA, and Rotterdam, Holland. Dora has also designed a book cover for the British Medical Association and worked as Technical Illustrator for the Department of Biochemistry at Bristol University. Tutoring adults has become an important part of Dora's life and today she teaches life drawing, painting and pastels at Sevenoaks Adult Education Centre. Open evenings 30th July & 8th August 7.15-9.30pm when all are welcome without appointment. |
