Introduction
Works of art lend themselves to a strangely great variety of approaches.
This cannot be said of many other man made things; for instance,
there is usually just one way of looking at a machine, and it may
be very dangerous to approach it with the wrong idea in mind. But
where works of art are concerned, people hold many different opinions,
not to say prejudices. One of your friends will insist that a picture
must have a clearly recognisable subject, preferably a story. Another
will just as enthusiastically assure you that a clearly recognisable
subject, let alone a story is a bad thing; that you ought to look
at a work of art as a combination of shapes and colours only, and
that you are hopelessly old fashioned if you insist on looking for
something else in addition.
However, there is only one way to approach a work of art and that
is with a receptive and expectant mind and heart, and to give it
a chance – and time! – To speak for itself.
