‘Sun. Sea, Seagulls and Icons’
John Lucas, (born in 1942) was educated at St Thomas’ School,
in Sevenoaks, from where he went to Tunbridge Wells School of
Art.
After a good pass in the N.D.D. John studied a vocational post-graduate
course in Graphics, Marketing and Advertising at Folkestone College
of Art. Following a varied career, which included working as an
Art Director in several Advertising Agencies, and as both Graphic
Designer and illustrator in publishing, he eventually went freelance
as a general Commercial artist often specializing in corporate
identity and illustration. (Lately all of the Sevenoaks Society’s
magazines have featured in his work).
Five years ago, whilst viewing local artists work during the
Open Studios period, he was invited to share studio space with
an old friend, who was about to retire from teaching art. This
gave him the chance to work on large canvases and his background
in illustration comes through in his paintings, which are mainly
naturalistic.
Most of his inspiration comes from the Kent and Sussex coastline,
especially Dungerness, Whitstable, Broadstairs and Hastings, where
he can often be seen taking photos for future reference. He also
tends to take his holidays in Cornwall where both his sketch book
and cameras are used to aid his inspiration.
John has also worked on some compositions inspired by famous
icons in the music industry, which, like many of his contemporary
artist, has been a lifelong interest.
