Art has always been a part of Ken’s life from an early
age when his grandfather, an Antiques dealer, took him around
the art galleries and auction rooms of Edinburgh.
In the sixties Ken began practising his artistic skills, whilst
studying Science at Sussex University. He first began painting
from still life and then self portraits in pen and paper, later
graduating to oils.
Moving to watercolour he studied the works of skilled children’s
artists, like Beatrix Potter, and discovered the richness of simplicity.
Ken now works in acrylics for larger, more developed pieces, taking
a mass of photographs on site, to capture scene, mood colour and
important details. These will then develop into painterly images
in the studio over periods of several months.
Ken also uses soft pastels relying on free and vibrant impressions
and works en plein air taking his watercolours to capture
the landscape where he says:
‘In a few hours with a few washes and a hint of detail
I get totally absorbed whilst my patient wife reads her books’.
