I seek to explore the ambiguous, the ‘grey area’ between presence and absence in atmospheric works which investigate the indeterminate nature of ‘ways of seeing’ and ‘ways of being’. The images evoke a kind of netherworld that conflates time, place, vision, and memory.

Born in Wimbledon, London, I initially trained as a classical ballet dancer, followed by a degree in Philosophy. I began a Post-Grad degree in Philosophy, but changed course as I discovered scuba diving and for 15 years worked as a Scuba Diving Instructor/Instructor Examiner and Educational Consultant for PADI Asia Pacific, travelling the world literally blowing bubbles. Having always had a keen interest in art, I finally took the plunge and undertook a degree in Fine Art at the National Art School in Sydney. I was lucky enough to be accepted for an Honours year, which I completed in 2011.

Life as a scuba diving instructor has informed my ‘eye’ resulting in work that reflects the experience of underwater vision. Everything seen is affected by movement, light and weather conditions and in this sense, nothing appears clearly defined. The paintings presented in this exhibition represent a continued investigation into ideas of the dissolving and emerging image and form; yet, may retain recognizable elements that could be metaphors for states of mind as much as they are specific sites.
