Louise Sheridan: Fragments of Life
1st March to 25th March 2011
Open evening Mon 7th March 7-9pm

Louise works from memories of travel and imagination to invent a private world, a universe that is echoed in the glowing paintings and collages she exhibits here. www.axisweb.org/artist/louisesheridan

My inspiration stems from a variety of sources – travel and journeys, with memories forming fragments of a visual diary; the beautiful river in London where I live; levels of existence in the extraordinary world we inhabit; the transient nature of life, creation, evolution and transformation; the search for order from chaos and vice versa and the humour glimpsed in all this.

I completed a B.A. Hons. Fine Art in Painting at Kingston Polytechnic and a Post-Graduate Course in Painting in Cyprus, but a trip to India for five months had a more profound effect on my work. It sparked a new energy and excitement from the images and colours I’d experienced and the hand made paper I found in Nepal. Layers of acrylic, inks and oil pastel are used during my process of working, sometimes with paintings and drawings cut up, reassembled and collaged together to create a rich surface texture and echoing images.

I lived in Barcelona for a year gaining a M.A. in European Fine Art, Painting, at the Winchester School of Art, where I had time to explore that extraordinary city and experiment with different techniques. More work was completed after travels in South East Asia, China, Iceland and Cuba. Drawing is an important part of my thought processes.

I regularly exhibit my paintings and have work in private and public collections including Paintings in Hospitals, Banque Paribas, Sheffield City Art Galleries, The Leicestershire Collection for Schools and College and the Towner Art Gallery Collection, Eastbourne. Commissioned work hangs in St. Thomas’ Hospital and on Royal Caribbean cruise ships. I also work as an artist in community and special needs education. Louise Sheridan
