Gill Hickman is inspired by textures in the environment and in life. She creates textured works on paper using quality materials; hand-made papers from Asia and gold and silver leaf.

Gill Hickman was born in 1955 and raised in the sleepy suburb of Bromley, Kent. After two year foundation at Croydon Art School, she studied art and education to Degree level at Kingston University. She became a teacher and expressed her creativity supporting her young pupils for twenty years. In 1997, after becoming a mother, she returned to art full time and now lives and has a studio in Brockley, South East London. As well as creating art, Gill Hickman also facilitates meditation classes in SE London. Her work is in many collections, both public and private in the UK and internationally. She has been the Director of the Skylark Galleries on London’s South Bank since 1999.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT :

My work is fundamentally autobiographical. I gain inspiration from the textures, patterns & layers I see around me and in the ups and downs of life. In the late eighties I was diagnosed with a life threatening illness and thought I would not survive. As part of my health regime I began to meditate regularly and I believe this has helped me to remain well. Mindful meditation also influences my artworks and the way I represent the human emotional landscape. I often work with basic shapes and forms, creating pieces which may appear simple yet can be extremely powerful. Collectors have described my works as “calming yet uplifting”.

I choose quality materials; fine hand-made papers, gold & silver leaf, and create embossed paper works, embellished collages, textured works on canvas and more recently eco light sculptures using recycled glass and led panels.
