Uncertain places – Woodland paintings by Angela Rumble
5th July to 10th August 2016
The themes and subject of my recent paintings are all taken from local woodland. I have altered and simplified my photographs as a starting point for the paintings. The woods in these paintings have an unsettling feel and the intricate filigree of forest branches force the viewer to walk a path that is like an endless labyrinth. Different woods have a different atmosphere. Deciduous woods evolve at their own pace and in their own way. The larch woods are sinister and darker – harsh, severe and gothic. The trees are dense and impenetrable and there is no way in or through them or, by implication, of escape from them. As the image becomes more abstract and all-over, it is possible to sense the immensity of detail, the multitude of growth and how it defines the space around it rather than a conventional view from one point. The image does not allow the eye to really focus on any one part but needs to keep moving.
