The Contemporary Female
1st July to 1st August 2008
Open evening 1st July 2008 7-9pm
This is the second solo exhibition for Jenny Phillips, who will be graduating with a B.A. in Fine Art in June. Jenny paints in a time when photoshop, video art, and performance art are in fashion. She considers that painting is not dead, and her love for painting drives her work, which is concerned with reality in the post modern world.
Her preferred styles are Realistic and Impressionistic, whilst she also wanders to Abstraction. Some of Jenny’s paintings are photo based appropriated images taken from newspapers during the month leading up to Christmas, depicting headline news. She uses photographs like a sketchbook for her paintings. With oil paint she shows material sensuality, figurative depiction, and hand labour intensiveness which may be spiritual and emotional. These paintings are personal, expressive and reflective. They demonstrate society now and the impact on the viewer. Some works are images of female models, wearing clothing which depicts their personal choice, confidence and imagination. Her aim is not to shock or astonish the viewer. Jenny Phillips considers that the surface of a painting is the cover of the feeling underneath the paint.
