Rose Colebridge: JUST FOR THE BIRDS
Tues 29th September to 23rd October 2009
Open evening 29th Sept 7-9pm
Colour is the constant thread that runs through my artistic practices even though stylistically I work in different ways. Just for the Birds is the fusion of colour and organic line that seems to occur quite naturally in the nature. The resultant combination is intended to make the viewer seek out the image for themselves with the visual disturbance making the lines and colours resonate and sing.
Rose Colebridge: Artist Statement
My work often tends to be experimental, trying different styles and formats including various forms of printmaking but I’m constantly drawn to colour and line, pushing the boundaries of representational work towards the abstract.
Just for the Birds is the fusion of colour and organic line that seems to occur quite naturally in the nature. The resultant combination is intended to make the viewer seek out the image for themselves with the visual disturbance making the lines and colours resonate and sing.
Abstracts derived from nature form the touchstone for my examination of pure colour in a free style and the resultant works are semi-abstract illusional forms. Between completing fragmentation works, I like to try out other styles and materials with the hope that this enables me to return to a new work with a fresh and open approach. During my painting life I have been influenced by the architectural style of Maria Josep Jujol (an assistant of Antoni Gaudi), the later works of John Piper, the colours of Rothko, Turner (of course!), and frequent visits to Africa.
Rose was the Guide Editor for South East Open Studios for 5 years and both of her original Gannets and Flamingoes were chosen as the cover illustrations of two issues of Index magazine.
