WILLIAM DI MEO: DELAYED BY SLEEP
13th February to 25th March 2018
Open evening 14th February 7-9pm
Having grown up in the West End of London I was always going to be influenced by the sights, sounds and people of the area. This combined with working in the video, advertising, film and theatre industries has been a major influence on my artwork. Indeed most of the pieces displayed are a result of images from Soho and the surrounding area.
It was whilst working in the theatre that I met the artist Tim Feltham who inspired me to pick up a paintbrush and start looking. With Tim’s encouragement, tutoring and frequent gallery visits I was hooked.
At this point I was working as a sound engineer and decided to borrow ideas from the world of Hip Hop i.e. sampling. It occurred to me that I could do visually what I had been doing with sound. I would photograph everything, paintings, buildings, people, anything that came into my field of vision, from this I would create an Abstract work while at the same time keeping the structure and soul of the original image. I started to inhabit these rather peculiar worlds and create from the inside out. You may find a strange familiarity in the work. It could be because you have passed them by a thousand times.
In the last year my work has been on view at the Kensington Garden Hotel and at Decorex – the interior design exhibition at Syon Park.
