These paintings exhibit a love of light, strong form and colour as a result of the Artist’s Australian background where these influences are ever-present. The works display richness, spontaneity, sensuality and style.

BARBARA ESDALE – Artist’s Statement

I have always wanted to paint and took the plunge 18 years ago! A love of light, strong form and colours is the result of my Australian background, where these influences are ever-present.

The acrylic abstract paintings are inspired by landscapes, cities, spaces memories and the emotional power of colour and light. They are created by dragging and dripping the paint, as well as using the brush, and contain may overlain glazed areas, where plains, levels and horizons are combined to create an intensive colour experience. These paintings are also evocative abstractions of place and certain visual symbols of landscape, reinforcing the idea that no abstract is completely removed from the natural.
I want to create an art of richness, spontaneity, sensuality and style.
Curriculum Vitae

I was born of British parents in Australia, followed by schooling in Sydney. After marriage, we decided to move to Britiain, where I have been a Kent resident for 50 years.
I qualified in City and Guilds Fashion and subsequently taught this subject at the Adult Education Centre in Tunbridge Wells. I was engaged as a teacher of textiles at West Heath Girls School at Sevenoaks.
Following retirement, I was able to devote myself to my long-held desire to paint. My works are painted in acrylic on canvas.

My work has been exhibited widely in Kent and Sussex, including the Battersea Arts Fair in London (2010), Hastings Arts Forum (2008/2009), The Gallery Hawkhust (2008), Chequer Mead East Grinstead (2008), participation in several SE Open Stuios (2008/2010), the St Juliens Club Sevenoaks (2001/2003).
