Jenny Philips: “On the Line”
23rd July to 16th August 2013
Open evening 25th July 7-9pm
These paintings represent some happy evenings walking through the streets of Dubrovnick and Rome. I particularly enjoyed looking at the washing lines hanging between the narrow streets, where the lines were hooked around old lamps and pots of plants. The washing was left out to dry for several days, much like my paintings, when I need to let them dry before I go back to them to add more paint.
I have studied Fine Art and have been painting and drawing for more than twenty years. I enjoy painting on canvas with oils and have more recently used watercolours. Like many artists, I enjoy recalling people I have seen on my travels and places of beauty. I intend to capture a moment in time, and bring that to the canvas in my studio at home. I believe that painting should remain an essentially hand-made creation.
I have a continuing interest in the work of the Impressionists and love to visit galleries in London and abroad. My own paintings are full of colour and light. I am interested in keeping a dark and light area in my work and I prefer keep a contrast. I usually scale the size of the painting to the subject of my painting, and have been painting small coffee cups and honey jars on a tiny scale. The seasons influence me and I enjoy painting the emptiness of winter as well as the flourish of spring and summer.
