Joan Weston: Round the World in 18 Pictures
4th March to 28th March 2014
Open evening 5th March 2014 7-9pm

Joan Weston has exhibited her paintings and art textiles at galleries and a wide variety of venues throughout the British Isles. Following the success of her exhibition of paintings at the Astor Community Theatre in Deal last year, Joan is delighted to have the opportunity to exhibit a collection of her latest work at the Ripley Arts Centre.

Since 1977 she has taught art and drama in Kent: she was the co-ordinator of Creative Arts at the Leigh City Technology College when it opened in Dartford in 1990 and then moved on to be the Head of the Creative Arts Faculty at Erith School in 1995. From 2002-12 she was the Head of Art at Dover Grammar School for Girls, and has now retired from teaching to spend more time travelling, painting, working on her photography and creating new textile pieces.

In 2013 she was very active in the co-ordination of the White Cliffs Project which she set up to celebrate the iconic white cliffs of Dover in art works, along with other painters, photographers and textile artists, together with pupils from St. Margaret’s Primary School and D.G.G.S. They exhibited their work in a variety of venues in St. Margaret’s, Dover, Crabble Corn Mill and at the Astor Theatre, during the summer and autumn.

She has also been busy running painting, patchwork and quilting workshops at the South Foreland Lighthouse, the St. Margaret’s Museum and the Pines Gardens Yurt. These have continued at the Museum over the winter and into 2014. Her paintings and photography feature a range of inspiration points, from the White Cliffs where she lives, to Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand which she visited in 2013. Some verge on the abstract and in others she has experimented with vibrant colour.
