“I love making layers in my prints and paper works – especially contrasting strong and fragile materials. My images come from natural forms, and my direct prints are made straight from natural objects, such as bark, leaves, stones. I use a wide variety of processes and of inks, paints and other materials.” Margaret Roberts

Margaret Roberts: Artist’s Statement

In recent years I have realised how layering is a theme in my work – whatever medium I am using.

My prints embody layering via the techniques of collagraph and monoprint; for example, several in the Show were printed using a single piece of bark which was repeatedly inked and passed through the press on to the same piece of paper.

Also shown are layered paper works. (I have a passion for handmade papers, particularly Japanese, and also make my own.) These place together papers I have printed on, and explore fine and coarse textures to give a three dimensional result.

Underlying all my work are ideas of simplicity, natural materials and organic forms.

I belong to East London Printmakers and to Hastings Arts Forum.

As well as print work, I paint portraits.
