Matt Vadis: Glass Series
26th February to 25th March 2013
Open eve: 28th February 7-9pm

An exploration of the effects of light through glass and how its reflective, refractive and diffractive properties can be manipulated to reveal abstract patterns in objects we otherwise take for granted.

The series is inspired by everyday objects and how they can be assigned new meaning through repeated use and observation.

By using light (with its unique properties) as a compositional tool, glass objects can be transformed from the familiar to the novel: similar to the way that if you read a sentence over and over again, its context, grammar and structure all gradually breakdown until a different idea is formed inside the mind of the observer.

I studied Animation Production at university and continue to pursue a career in the creative arts. In animation, when creating the illusion of movement, the goal is to strive for believability or an impression, rather than realism and it is this sentiment that I want to convey in my single image works: to use suggestion instead of the hyperreal.

To create the series I used white pencils and Tipp-Ex pens on black boards. The decision to use only black and white was an aesthetic choice as well as a way to increase ambiguity, leaving the viewer to interpret the images in their own way; much like finding shapes in the clouds.
