These two artists take a fresh look at the “realities” of everyday life in different ways. Sian’s work creates a sense of space and light, expressed in subtle colours. Robin’s paintings have a strong sense of colour, texture and form.

Robin Thompson:
I look at contemporary issues in my paintings. For example I have recently produced works on climate change, the “Big Society”, growing into older age and on the way we tend to marginalise ourselves. I also enjoy painting landscapes and cityscapes. I work mainly in oil, but I often use mixed media to convey the physicality and fragility of our world.

SIAN BECKETT – Artists Statement
My paintings are intuitive and explore light, colour and form in space.
My pictures investigate the effect of light on forms in space and are inspired by nature, imagination and the world around me, they explore the feelings that are evoked and the relationships between colours and forms.

I layer veils of colour on the canvas using washes, thin glazes and thicker slabs of paint, and this is combined with an exploratory use of line. To use line in a very fluid, economical but descriptive way is one of my goals.

The paintings are mostly in acrylics but sometimes watercolours and mixed media as well. Harmony, balance, contrast and variety all determine the way these marks and areas of paint are organised on the picture surface.
