Hayes School : Who am I?
4th February to 28th February 2014
Open evening Wednesday 5th February 2014 7-9pm
A selection of work by Hayes Secondary School students.
Hayes Art department is proud to showcase a selection of portraits, figurative pieces and still-life compositions which explore identity, cultural heritage and self-expression through the media of paint, textiles and photography.
Portraits reveal young people’s fascination with faces, hairstyles and expressions. Students are interested in how personalities and characters can be interpreted. Stance, pose, gesture all suggest something of the nature of the sitter. Self-portraits might be idealised or the subject of fantasy.
The predominance of self-portraits indicate our students’ concern with appearance and identity, how they perceive themselves and how they appear to others. Our collection of portraits, figurative and still life compositions are not only descriptive of outward appearances, but express inner psychological states, reflecting feelings moods and aspirations.
Our exhibition reflects students’ interest in opening up a new world of possibilities through the use of mixed media, textiles materials and digital manipulation.
Students and young people are continually questioning ‘who they are’…… working creatively and visually to establish a burgeoning adult self-awareness and identity to convey to the world around them. Through thoughts, expressions, feelings and insights this exhibition reflects students’ responses to their growing presence in this sometimes cruel and harsh world.
