Jonathan Brann: Layers
29th January to 22nd February 2013
Open eve. Tues 29th January 7-9pm
A range of acrylic abstracts that explores the organic structures found in nature, through free flowing brush strokes and vibrant colours. From the depictions of autumnal leaves to a microscopic close-up of a grain of carbon, each work is intended to be seen in full and up close, section by section.
I have had a passion for the arts from an early age and have always tried to diversify in as many areas as possible, ranging from graphic and furniture designs, textiles, to fine art and sculpture, animation and film-making.
For painting my medium has always been acrylic paint, mainly for its vibrancy but also its ability to forgive my freeform style. This is typified in much of the most recent work, which employs broader brush strokes and increased paint thickness.
Whilst the repetitious strokes and paint drips may seem random, they actually follow a very specific choreography in production. This includes stringent periods between the time each layer of colour is applied, so as to allow only partial mixing of tones and to avoid resulting in a mass of rusty greys. Other works call for paint to be more translucent, whilst at the same time allowing for vivid tones to be maintained. This is done with tried and tested paint-to-water ratios.
The results of these and other techniques, combined with the scale on which I enjoy working, are works with the impression of distance between the layers, inviting the viewer to walk though it and fixate on any particular area they find appealing. This can range from half a canvas to an area just ten centimetres square.
