A selection of linear work by four members of the Goddard family – all working with highly individual styles yet influenced by their life together. Terry – cut and painted wooden reliefs, Phillippa – Indian ink resists, Emily – interwoven images in ink and acrylic, Jessica – cut paper.
Terry, now retired from teaching art, and Phillippa, working as a freelance artist, are the parents of Emily, an illustrator and Jessica, a physicist.
Following a successful open studio event at the family home on Romney Marsh as part of this year’s South East Open Studios ( www.seos-art.org ) in June, ‘Along Family Lines’ emphasises and distils their similarities through line as well as lineage.
The pieces explore lines that dart, curve, wriggle and surround, lines as the negative spaces running between shapes and colours, lines that modulate by changing in weight and strength to describe and define form, lines that exist but are not drawn, and the unbroken line, like knitting, threading its way under and over, in, round, through and off.
